Program details

Pilates at Sutherland is a low-impact, strength-based exercise program designed specifically for older adults. Classes focus on improving muscle strength, balance, flexibility, and posture using Pilates reformers, resistance bands, and bodyweight exercises.

Each session is tailored to individual ability levels and incorporates progressive resistance to support safe and effective strength gains. Our experienced instructors ensure exercises are suitable for participants with limited mobility, chronic conditions, or those returning to exercise.

Classes run for 45 to 60 minutes, with a minimum of two sessions per week recommended for best results.

Participants who would not be suitable for the program:

While Pilates at Sutherland is designed to be adaptable for most older adults, certain participants may not be suitable for the program without additional medical clearance or tailored modifications. These include:
- Individuals with severe cognitive impairments or advanced dementia, as they may struggle to follow instructions safely.
- Participants who are immediately post-surgery or undergoing acute rehabilitation without medical clearance.
- Those who require walking aids for mobility may participate only if assessed individually and with appropriate program modifications.
- Individuals who are unable to safely manage stairs or perform basic functional movements at a reasonable pace.
- People with unstable cardiovascular or respiratory conditions that contraindicate moderate exercise without supervision.
All participants undergo initial screening, and suitability is determined by qualified instructors in consultation with healthcare providers as needed to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Special requirements or conditions:

Participants are advised to wear comfortable, form-fitting clothing such as long pants and a fitted top to allow ease of movement and safe participation in floor and reformer exercises. Supportive, non-slip footwear or bare feet are recommended depending on the exercise. Participants should bring their own towel and water bottle. Pilates reformer sessions require participants to have basic mobility to safely use the equipment, and any medical concerns should be disclosed prior to starting the program.
